SubGenius.Finance NFTs on Gnosis

This thread is for talking about the NFTs SubGenius.Finance builds on Gnosis: what's out, what they do, what broke, and what's next. The front page for all of them is subgenius.finance/wbob/nfts/.

Each NFT has its own topic on this board, oldest first: Nº1 Certificate of Arbitrage · Nº2 Space Banker · Nº3 Dobbscoin Promo #1. Failed tries never get a topic.

How we build them
  • Everything lives on the chain. Most NFTs are a receipt pointing at a picture on somebody's server. Ours carry their pictures, sounds and players inside the contract. If our website goes away, they keep working on Gnosisscan.
  • Every xDAI is a donation, and it gets locked. Sales go to the vault, which turns the xDAI into GNO bids under wBOB in the wBOB/GNO pool, locked for four years. Nobody can skim it, including us.
  • wBOB that comes in is never dumped. When an NFT takes wBOB, that wBOB will be placed for sale above the price in wBOB/GNO. Anyone can buy it there, and whatever they pay stays locked in its place for four years. A sale can't push the price down; it only meets buyers paying more. (Not built yet. No NFT takes wBOB today.)
  • Nothing ships until it plays on the real Gnosisscan page. Dress rehearsal on mainnet first, then a human presses PLAY.

What's out
  • Dobbscoin Promo #1: a 43-second (BOB) radio spot as a numbered NFT, 1000 copies, given in thanks for a 1 xDAI donation. Press PLAY on Nº1 on Gnosisscan and it reads itself off the chain, then shows live how many are out and how much GNO the vault has locked.
  • Space Banker: send 1 xDAI or more to the contract and it buys you wBOB and mints your Space Banker certificate. One per wallet, can't be sold or moved.
  • Certificate of Arbitrage: not for sale. Arb bots that loop through our wBOB pools earn one, minted straight to the machine.

Receipts

NFTs are collectibles, not investments. Donations go to SubGenius.Finance, are locked as liquidity, and are not refundable.

Questions, ideas, bug reports, and "it didn't play for me" all go below. Praise "Bob".

What an NFT actually is, and where every NFT's limits come from

If you watched the NFT craze, you were sold the idea that you were buying a piece of art. You weren't. You were buying an entry in a list that says which wallet owns number 4,127. That's what the standard is.

Where it came from
ERC-721, the standard almost every NFT uses, came out of CryptoKitties in late 2017 and was finalized in 2018. The people who wrote it wanted a way for any wallet or exchange to read "this wallet owns cat #4,127." It does four things: says who owns a number, moves it, lets someone else move it for you, and announces when it moved. The examples in the standard are houses, collectibles and loans. It's a deed registry.

The picture was an afterthought
The standard has one optional function that hands back a link to a small file with a name, a description and a picture. That's it. Most projects pointed that link at their own web server. When the server went away, so did the picture, which is why so many expensive NFTs now show a broken image. The owner still owns number 4,127. Number 4,127 just doesn't look like anything anymore.

Sound and players came from a marketplace
The field that lets an NFT carry a video or a web page was invented by a marketplace, not by the standard. Explorers like Gnosisscan honor it because the marketplaces did.

Why it's so boxed in
An interactive NFT is a stranger's code running on somebody else's website. To keep that code from stealing logins or wallets, the site locks it in a box: scripts can run, but links don't open, nothing can be saved, popups are blocked, and some ways of playing sound just fail. Those limits aren't there to help artists. They're the website protecting itself from whatever you hand it.

What we do with it
Our NFTs keep the picture, the sound and the player inside the contract itself, so there's no server to go dark. Dobbscoin Promo #1 reads its own sound off the chain, plays it, and shows live how many are out and how much the vault has locked. Doing that inside the box took most of a week and three tries in public. The details are in the topic for each NFT on this board.
